    Questions on our curtains?

See answers to our most frequently asked questions on bay window curtains. If you have a question about our service or your appointment, see our FAQs here.

Can you fit curtains around my bay window?

Yes. If you choose one of our curtain poles or tracks specially designed for bay windows, your local advisor will fit it for you. They'll also measure and fit your bay window curtains at no extra cost.

How do I measure my bay window for curtains?

There are lots of factors to consider when it comes to measuring for curtains, including getting the width right so there is enough 'gather' in the fabric and getting the drop spot on so they hang at the right level. You also need to think about the type of curtain pole or track you need to suit the curve of your bay and the header type you've chosen, plus make sure the curtains glide smoothly around the window. At Hillarys we take care of all the measuring and fitting, with friendly advisors local to you. They'll even fit your pole or track if ordered from our range.

How do I hang curtains in a bay window?

There are lots of factors to consider when looking at hanging curtains in a bay window.

For example, would you prefer a curtain pole to coordinate with your curtain fabric and other room accessories, or a discreet curtain track? What sort of header would you like? The curtain header is the top piece of the curtain that attaches to the curtain pole or track and your choice affects the overall look of your curtains. For example, do you prefer a modern or traditional feel? Relaxed or tailored? Your advisor will be able to explain the differences.

Do you want a pole or a track to hang your curtains from? Curtains hung from a curtain pole will be suspended at about the same level or just below it, whereas curtains fitted to a track will cover the track itself. And what’s the right height for your curtain pole or track? If you want your window to look taller and grander than it really is, you could position your pole or track as close to the ceiling as possible and allow your curtains to hang to the floor. A recessed bay window with a window sill may suit a shorter-length curtain.

Your local advisor will give you plenty of advice for your bay window on all these factors and more during your in-home appointment. They'll take care of the measuring and fitting too, so you can be sure of a really neat finish, first time. It's all included in the price.

How do I fit a bay window curtain track?

You don't need to! When you buy a curtain track from Hillarys your local advisor will come over and fit it for you, so you can be sure that your new bay window curtains will fit perfectly, first time. All measuring and fitting is included in the price, as part of our in-home service.

What curtains are best for bay windows?

Curtains are a perfect choice for bay windows, fitting the shape perfectly and becoming an elegant focal point. The choice of curtain fabric is very much a personal one depending on the look you want for your room, and the problem your window dressing is trying to solve. Our elegant Voile curtains offer daytime privacy for example; team them with blinds or curtains for a day-to-evening look.

Or how about layering curtains over blinds for added privacy, flexible light control and to reduce heat loss through your windows? You can also choose a blackout or thermal lining for your curtains for a cosier finish. You'll need to think not only about style and practical benefits, but how your curtains need to be fitted too. Square bay window curtains need to be fitted differently to box bay window curtains or you might even want us to make you a pair of short bay window curtains. Your local advisor can talk you through all the different options and help you find the right solution. They'll even take care of the measuring and fitting too.

Do bay window curtains keep heat in?

Yes, curtains are great insulators and can help to reduce heat loss. To keep as much heat as possible in your home, choose curtains with a thermal lining or blackout lining - it'll help reduce heat loss to keep your home cosier. A blackout lining will also help block the light if you need a darker environment. Choose naturally thicker curtain fabrics like velvet or layer your curtains over a made-to-measure blind to improve the thermal qualities of your curtains even further. Closing your curtains by dusk will help insulate your bedroom windows at night and keep the space feeling cosy.
